Mystery Tackle Box vs Lucky Tackle Box Review

Yay! First month of two new lure subscriptions, and the contents of both boxes look incredibly exciting. You might say to yourself, why does a kayak fishing shop need monthly lure subscriptions? Well, let’s get that one out of the way – quick! We like to try new stuff as much as anyone else out there. We do buy new things from our distributors and from the manufacturers, but since we usually have to order in case quantities, that can be an EXPENSIVE way to look for new products or suppliers. Minimum orders from manufacturers can be up to $10,000 if you want to buy direct from the manufacturers, which means that we can’t selectively try new products to decide what to carry in the shop. So, just like the angler at home, these subscription boxes give us a great value on new lures from a range of companies. Also, as a small business, we love to do business with smaller, independent suppliers. Another great plus with both of these subscription boxes is that the contents represent a range of companies – foreign and domestic. Since the product managers from LTB and MTB are doing the thinking and sorting, our shop is getting a look at 10-15 new products a month – several from quality suppliers that we had never heard of. So yeah, like it says on the MTB box, #HAPPYDANCE !!
Next questions? What boxes are we getting, and what was in the box (of course)!

The MTB box we chose is the seasonal Walleye Pro box. While there’s not a lot of Walleye in our area, there’s a lot of trolling in walleye fishing, and most lures are very compatible cross species. Since a big part of kayak fishing is trolling or deep jigging, we thought that we’d see what comes in. The July box has a Yo-zuri 3DB Shad ($9.99), Dynamic Lures Travado ($8.95), Rapala Jointed Minnow ($8.49), Sitka Yukon Spoon 2 pack ($6.99), Fishing Physics Swimbait ($5.99), Soco Baits Large Fry ($4.00). Also a sticker (what am I going to do with all this stickers????) and the “Dibble Digest.” Way over the top on value. Brands we were totally unfamiliar with. Also, I think we’re going to repost some of the Dibble content for our blog. There is great content for new and experienced fishermen in there.

The LTB subscription we chose was the Bass “XL”. Contents were the Biwaa S’Trout 5.5” ($25.99), Castaic Jerky-J 5” 4 pack ($5.79), Luck-E-Strike Salty Elite French Fry ($4.99), Mizmo Baits Doodle Worm 10 pack ($3.75), Mustad Octopus Drop shot hook 5 pack ($1.50), Livetarget Frog Popper ($13.49), and Storm Arashi Square3 ($8.99). Also, since it was the first box, we got a free Livingston Lure Pro Sizzle ($11.99). So value wise, also an incredible deal. LTB has a youtube channel that shows how to fish the stuff if you want a little guidance, stop by their Channel

Is there a clear winner between the two? From an exploring new/smaller products angle, and the Dibble content, MTB was more interesting. If you’re looking at straight cash value, not including promotional lures, LTB gives you more apparent “bang for the buck.”
We will be working hard testing these lures from our demo kayaks, Nu-Canoe’s, and fishing SUPs. The best of them will be added to our in-store product line up. The rest, well, we’ll probably wear them out in the field, or give them away as promotional products during our demo events.
Keep an eye on the MVKS website, blog, facebook, and Instagram to stay up to date with our new products and promotions. We strive to run a spam free business, so you have to sign up if you want to hear about the latest demo events and news.
